Most Common Types of Blood Cancer

· Healthcare

When we talk about the types of blood cancer there are so many of them that it is practically impossible to list all of them. However, these cancers can be broadly categorized into three parts the Leukemia, Lymphoma, and Myeloma.

Blood is the liquid made up of red blood cells, white blood cells, and the platelets. It runs throughout our body with the help of the blood vessels. The blood is moved to and from the heart with the help of the blood vessels only. In some person, the normal production and function of blood cells are interrupted by the uncontrollable growth of abnormal cells. This situation of abnormal cells production in blood cells is called blood cancer. Most of these cancers originate in the bone marrow where these cells originate. Blood cancer can be divided into three categories based on the types of cells they affect. These three types of blood cancer include leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma.

Leukemia

This blood cancer characterized by the uncontrollable growth of abnormal white blood cells. This cancer can be found in the bone marrow or the blood of the patient. The new White Blood Cells formed are unable to fight against the infection and also impair the system of forming platelets and red blood cells. Due to this, the function of the body starts to deteriorate slowly.

Leukemia can either be acute or chronic. Acute is the one that spreads suddenly and requires immediate treatment. On the other hand, chronic leukemia is the one that progresses more slowly than acute leukemia. Leukemia can be further divided into four classes as mentioned below-

  • Acute myelogenous leukemia
  • Chronic myelogenous leukemia
  • Acute lymphocytic leukemia
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia

The various signs and symptoms of this condition largely depend upon the type of leukemia a person is suffering from. However, there exist some of the common symptoms like headaches, enlarged liver and spleen, fever, chills, night sweats, bone pain, weight loss, paleness, pinhead-size red spots on the skin, swollen tonsils, swollen or bleeding, gums, weakness, and fatigue.

Lymphoma

The type of blood cancer affecting the lymphatic system of the person is called lymphoma. This system provides the body of the person the immune cells to fight the infection and inflammation. If the person suffering from lymphoma the lymphocytes (the main type of infection-fighting white blood cells) present in his body is affected. In this cancer, the rapid abnormal multiplications occur and create a collection within the lymph nodes and other tissues such as bone marrow, blood, and spleen. There is mainly two kinds of lymphoma one is Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and other is Hodgkin lymphoma.

Myeloma

This is cancer affecting the plasma cells the type of white blood cells responsible for fighting the diseases by producing the specific antibodies to combat with them. In this condition, the normal production and functioning of the red blood cells and plasma cells are affected by the multiplication of myeloma cells. The uncontrollable growth of the plasma cells in the bone marrow of the person prevents it from triggering the action of the immune system.
